ST. LOUIS (AP) - Plans to expand the St. Louis Zoo are moving forward with the zoo's purchase of the 13.5-acre property of the former Forest Park Hospital.

The St. Louis Zoo Association closed the purchase on Friday. Plans for the deal were announced in March.

The private, nonprofit association is paying for the purchase. Zoo officials say the site offers the only adjacent land available to the zoo, in Forest Park.

The sale price was not disclosed. Planning for how to use the site is expected to continue for six to eight months.

Zoo officials expect to announce detailed plans in mid-2013.
