Witnesses say they didn't see the Jeep until it was too late. They could only watch as it sank into a lake in the Southern Hills neighborhood in east Springfield.
Police tell KTTS News at the scene that rescue crews found an elderly woman dead inside the vehicle.
Initial reports show she may have lost control as she headed south on Skyline Drive.
Authorities will release the victim's name when her family can be notified.
