The Springfield fire marshal says some chemicals thrown together in a trash can sparked a fire in a fourth floor chemistry lab at Missouri State University.
When firefighters arrived at Temple Hall, students and teachers had already evacuated the building.
Fire damage has been contained to the lab and some water damage on the third floor.
The assistant fire chief says crews went from room to room checking for other damage.
It will be a while before students and teachers will be allowed back into the building.
