The DARE drug program has been cut from classrooms across the nation.  Budgets are just too tight right now.

But in Christian County, the sheriff has made it a priority of his to keep DARE, depending on volunteers and donations from the community.

DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resisitance Education.

DARE officer, Deputy Bill Whitaker, says the program has morphed into more than keeping kids off drugs and alcohol.

Now he has to address things like cyber-bullying.

He also has to talk to kids about smart phones.

Sparta Middle School Principal, Shawn Poyser, says DARE is an asset to his kids. He says they continualy worry about prescription drugs.

Guaranty Bank donated $5,000 dollars to keep DARE going in many school districts across Christian County.

Currently in Christian County, Nixa, Clever, Billings, Spokane, Sparta and Chadwick are involved in DARE.
