Committee Picks Branson's Highway 76 Design Firm
Branson's capital improvements committee has picked the design team they think should draw up changes to the 76 Strip.
Four design teams made their pitch about a month ago to come up with ways they say they can make the main drag through town look better -- Cook, Flatt & Strobel from Kansas City gets the thumbs up.
Aldermen will make a final vote once city staff has gone over details.
For at least the past 5 or 6 years talk would come up at aldermen meetings about how to make Branson look better and more appealing to tourists.
Former Alderman Dick Gass said during one meeting Branson needed to start moving away from its 'hillbilly image' and clean up some of the old advertising gimmicks that lined Highway 76 from Highway 65 on the east end of the Strip to the west end out where Celebration City used to exist.
Supporters of Branson's history and heritage have maintained that the city needs to keep some of what has always delighted tourists for decades.
Backers of redesigning the look of 76 say an upscale look will draw more businesses and fill in vacant lots where shops closed up when the economy started crashing in 2008.
