(MoNet) - The Missouri health department has 25 confirmed deaths caused by the heat.

Spokeswoman Gena Terlizzi says there might be more, but they are waiting for death certificates.

She says 20 have been in the St. Louis metro-area, 1 in the Kansas City metro-area, and four in rural areas -- 2 in Phelps Country, 1 in Pettis County and another in Randolph County.

Kansas City has at least 8 more suspected heat-related deaths.

Terlizzi says many of the people who died were found in closed-up houses without air conditioning or they had air conditioning, but it wasn't turned on.

At this point in the summer of 2010, the health department had recorded 5 heat-related deaths, and last year it had counted 16 confirmed heat-related deaths.
