Nixon Vetoes Missouri Vehicle Sales Tax Legislation

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon has vetoed legislation allowing Missouri communities to resume levying sales taxes on vehicle purchases despite a lobbying effort from local officials and vehicle dealers.
Nixon announced the decision Thursday, saying the bill would improperly impose a tax without a public vote.
Many Missourians long have paid state and local taxes when buying a vehicle. But the state Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that some local taxes cannot be levied when the purchase was made in another state. Lawmakers responded with a bill to reinstate the local taxes. Local officials and vehicle dealers warn of lost tax revenue and customers buying cars and RVs elsewhere.
Shortly after the bill passed in May, Nixon expressed similar reservations about the tax legislation.
