  • Kolten Wong Waits To Take Batting Practice At Kauffman Stadium

A pair of Springfield Cardinals showcased their talent before a national television audience as the U-S Futures beat the World Futures 17-5 Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.

Oscar Taveras, who played the entire game for the World Team in right field and center, had one hit in three at bats. Wong, who started at second base for the U-S Futures, was 0-2 with a run scored.

Taveras tells KTTS News he was pleased with his performance on his first national stage. "The team played good, working hard. I played good, great defense, and hitting."

Wong says it's an amazing experience to play in the Futures Game. "When I first got out there, you're going to have those nerves, a few butterflies. but once the game started, everything kind of just felt like normal, and I felt like I belonged." And what about his peformance in the game? "I could have done a little better, but the good thing was I just had fun and didn't get hurt. That's the main thing right now, just going out there and playing the game."

The U-S team carried a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the 6th when it busted the game open with a nine run inning. Detroit's Nick Castellanos, who had a single to lead off the inning, batted for a second time in the inning and blasted a three run homer to center.

Jurickson Profar, who plays for the Frisco Roughriders, had a home run in the first inning for the World Futures against Kansas City Royals prospect Jake Odorizzi. Jae-Hoon Ha, who plays Double-A ball for the Chicago White Sox, also had a home run for the World Team.

Castellanos and Jonathan Singleton from the Corpus Christi Hooks, had three hits each to lead the U-S Team, who banged out 17 hits to go with its 17 runs.

The State Farm Home Run Derby highlights Monday's action at Kauffman Stadium, followed by the 83rd Major Baseball All Star Game Tuesday night.
