A Springfield police officer with a keen eye in the early morning hours today helped keep a house from burning down.

Assistant Fire Chief David Scheiderer tells KTTS  News this was near West Bypass and Commercial.

He says the officer was on routine patrol when he spotted smoke coming from the back of the single-story house.

Fire crews observed heavy smoke when they arrived and Scheiderer says they had the flames out in about ten minutes.

The fire started in the bathroom, but the cause is undetermined.

There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the bathroom, and heavy smoke damage throughout the rest of the house.

No one was home at the home and a fire marshal is investigating.
