Back-To-School Assistance Available
Information Provided by Salvation Army
Children and families in need of back-to-school assistance are encouraged to seek help from The Salvation Army.
Each year, The Salvation Army’s back-to-school assistance program helps local children in need by providing them with basic school supplies, backpacks, clothing and haircuts. Assistance is available for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade who live in Greene and Christian counties.
“Our hope is to not only ease the financial burden placed on many low-income families during this time of year, but to also give children the confidence they need in order to learn and succeed,” Major Claire Grainger,Springfield Corps Officer, said.
Families can sign up for assistance beginning July 2nd through July 13th, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. & on Monday evenings from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
The Salvation Army is located at 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway. Distribution will take place on Monday July 30th at The Salvation Army’s Family Thrift Store located at 1737 S. Campbell Ave.
To sign up for assistance a picture ID, social security card for everyone in the household, proof of income & proof of residency such as a piece of mail within the last twelve months are all required. “We hope that the assistance we provide helps level the playing field for these children,” Grainger said. “While we can’t supply everything, we can help with the very basics and for some these basic items are all that they’ll have.”
Last year, The Salvation Army provided back-to school assistance for more than 900 local children and anticipates helping even more this year. Helping so many requires the help of many others. Numerous volunteers are needed from Saturday July 28th through Monday July 30th to help pack backpacks, sort school supplies and act as ‘shopping buddies’ for the children & families receiving assistance.
In addition to volunteers, school supplies and new or gently used children’s clothing – especially boy’s clothing – are also needed. To register and signup for help click here.
