Prosecutors in Greene County say James Duke shot Hillcrest High school classmate Cody Ray to death more than two years ago.
Springfield police say Duke pulled the trigger at the request of another man who afraid Ray would testify against him in court.
Duke says his actions were in self-defense and his lawyer wants the judge to consider lesser charges.
The judge will issue a ruling later.
