State School Board Backing Tobacco Tax Hike Issue
(AP) - The Missouri Board of Education is backing a November ballot issue that asks voters in Missouri to raise tobacco taxes to help the schools.
If the referendum is passed, Missouri's lowest in the nation cigarette tax would rise from 17 cents to 90 cents per pack in January.
About 80 percent of the money raised from the tax would be used to help public schools along with colleges and universities.
