Flames broke out at the Lake Shore Apartments in southwest Springfield around 6:00pm Sunday night. The complex is near Kansas Expressway just north of James River Freeway.

Witnesses say smoke was billowing from building 21, which was evacuated. One woman who lives on the third floor says she was out at a restaurant when she heard about the fire. Sarah Shadi says a big thank you goes out to whoever rescued her pets.

Fire Marshal Phil Noah tells KTTS News at the scene that one firefighter had some minor smoke inhalation, but no serious injuries came out of the fire.

Officials say the Red Cross will help those in five or six apartments that will be looking for places to stay.

No word yet on how the fire may have started.
