British Fugitive Indicted On 3 Federal Charges
(AP) - A 56-year-old British man suspected of pulling off a $1.5 million heist in England nearly 20 years ago has been indicted in Missouri on federal weapons and other charges.
Federal prosecutors said a grand jury on Tuesday charged Edward John Maher of Ozark with aggravated identity theft, document fraud and firearms violations.
The indictment replaces a federal criminal complaint filed Feb. 9 that charged Maher with one count of being an illegal immigrant with a firearm.
Maher has been named a suspect in the 1993 disappearance in England of an armored van containing the equivalent of $1.5 million.
He's been in federal custody since his arrest Feb. 8 in Ozark, where he had been living under his brother's name.
Maher told federal agents he's been in the U.S. since 1998.
