Grand Jury In Missouri Expected To Hear Maher Case
(AP) - A federal grand jury is expected to hear the case of a 56-year-old British man accused of robbing an armored car in England nearly 20 years ago who is now being held in southwest Missouri on a federal weapons charge.
Edward Maher is a suspect in the 1993 theft of the armored car containing the equivalent of about $1.5 million.
He was arrested Feb. 8 in Ozark on a charge of being an illegal immigrant with a firearm.
The judge at Maher's preliminary hearing Wednesday in Springfield ordered that the case go before a grand jury, which is typical for federal cases.
The grand jury will consider the evidence and determine if other charges are warranted.
Maher appeared at the brief hearing with a public defender, who declined comment afterward.
