(AP) - Two gorillas who wandered away from their habitat on Sunday at the Kansas City Zoo escaped because keepers forgot to lock two interior cage doors.
Zoo visitors were briefly kept in secured areas when the gorillas got into a keepers area. But zoo officials say the public was never in any danger. Zoo employees used water hoses to prod the animals back into their habitat after about three hours.
Zoo director Randy Wisthoff said Monday that the two employees would be disciplined and zoo procedures will be reviewed.
The Kansas City Star reports that the gorillas got into the hallway of the holding building where keepers attend to them. The two males had access to an outdoor yard but not to public areas of the zoo.
