Demolition To Begin At Tornado-Damaged Joplin High School
(AP) - Demolition work is scheduled to begin within days at Joplin High School, which was destroyed by the May 22 tornado.
School officials say the demolition will begin by the end of this week or early next week, as soon as workers finish pumping water from the basement and complete asbestos removal.
Five schools were destroyed by the tornado and several others were damaged.
The Joplin Globe reports school officials hope to break ground for all new school sites in May. The new high school, which will be combined with Franklin Technology Center, is scheduled to be completed by August 2014.
Residents will vote in April on a $62 million bond issue for the rebuilding of schools, the addition of safe rooms and two new combined elementary schools.
