Groups Debate Name For Missouri Tax Measure
(AP) - A debate about whether to replace Missouri's income tax with an expanded sales tax also has prompted a discussion about what to call the idea.
Several versions have been proposed for a ballot measure that could appear before voters next year. Supporters contend it would boost the state's economy and eliminate a form of double taxation. Opponents are concerned about how middle and lower income people would be affected and think that it would cause state government to collect less revenue.
The group Let Voters Decide is sponsoring the tax proposal. They call it the Missouri Taxpayer Relief Act.
The opposition group Missourians for Fair Taxation prefers the name Almost Everything Tax. The recently formed Coalition for Missouri's Future labels the proposal the Everything Tax.
