GOULD, Ark. (AP) - Police have arrested two men in connection with an attack on the mayor of the small Arkansas town of Gould.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler  says 37-year-old Don Smith and 34-year-old DeCarlos Smith face battery charges after a late July attack on Mayor Earnest Nash Jr.

Nash and members of the Gould city council have been embroiled in a dispute for months over ordinances that the city council has passed.  One ordinance banned any groups from meeting without the city council's permission.  The city council repealed the law Tuesday night after a public
outcry.

Nash says he was attacked while talking to two city council members.  He would describe the incident in a TV interview with his face still bloodied.
