Friday night at the movies got cut short when power went out in a section of south Springfield affecting the Campbell 16 Cine.

Fire crews were called in for a report of smoke in the building around the time the power went out. Battalion Chief Kevin Smart told reporter Austin Robertson at the scene that it was completely dark when they rolled up.

It was the second time in the same night they were called to a large building for reports of smoke during a power outage. The same thing happened a few hours earlier at K-Mart just up the road.

Moviegoers say it was a packed house and people were in the dark for 20-30 minutes before being told to evacuate. They told KTTS that the theater offered each of them a free pass for another show.

Once the place was cleared out, crews started checking for what caused the reported smoke. As of last check with crews at the scene, they were still looking and weren't sure.

When KTTS tried to talk to managers, they said any information or comment would have to come from the corporate office.

No word on how long the theater will be out of commission, but fire crews didn't expect to find any significant damage.
