Springfield Cardinals Win Home Opener 9-4 Over Frisco

On a night when Hall of Fame pitcher Steve Carlton through out the ceremonial first pitch, the Springfield Cardinals opened their seventh season at Hammons Field with a 9-4 win over the Frisco Roughriders.

The storms held off until the Cards were able to get the game in, but it was the Birds' offense that supplied the thunder as Springfield scored eight runs in the bottom of the 7th.

Frisco jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 4th on a home run by leftfielder Michael Bianucci off Cards starter Nick Additon.

The Roughriders extended their lead to 4-0 in the 6th on a couple of run scoring singles, but Springfield fought back wih a single tally in the 6th before sending 12 men to the plate in that eight run 7th inning.

Former MSU Bears pitcher Matt Frevert (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief to pick up the win. Fabio Castillo (0-1) blew the save and suffered the loss for Frisco.  

With the win, Springfield improves to 3-4 and Frisco drops to 3-4. There were 5,247 fans in attendance at the ball park.  

The Cardinals and Roughriders will continue the series Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:07 at Hammons Field.
