Having Miranda Lambert join Keith Urban on "We Were Us" almost didn't come to life, due to label issues and the fact that the song was not intended to be a duet.
Jimmy Robbins, one of the song's writers, said Miranda was originally not going to be a choice since she is on a different record label, which requires approval by too many people.
He was also worried about the song not making the cut, saying "Songs get cut, and don't make records, and get cut again. But once we heard Keith and Miranda sing "We Were Us", it would have been hard to hear anybody else sing it because it sounds like it was made for them".
The song was not set to be a duet until Jimmy and his co-writers started writing the second verse, and could hear a guy possibly sayings those lines. Keith also thought it could be a duet and so he set his sights on Miranda.
