Lent is all about giving up something... fasting from something you are attached to... for 40 days. Well, I'm stealing a really good idea I saw on Facebook: "40 Bags In 40 Days!"
It's all about decluttering your life. And the junk we hold onto that clutters our homes and our work spaces... heck, even our cars... is something we could all benefit from letting go. You just make the committment to unclutter 40 areas, and fill 40 bags of junk to clear out of your house, in the 40 days of Lent. And, yes, just like Lent, you get a day off each week... traditionally Sunday, but any day of the week will work.
You don't have to fill a large garbage bag, either. It can be a grocery bag, kitchen garbage bag, or even those 30 gallon leaf bags. And don't worry about cleaning an entire room each day - or the garage - it can be something as small as the kitchen junk drawer; sorting through your shoes; cleaning out the bathroom cabinet; decluttering your makeup drawer; pitching all those plastic cups in the kitchen... you get the idea. Just identify 40 areas you want to declutter, make your list, and get started!
Don't worry if you miss a day, we all get busy, just do the best you can. If you fall off that horse, get back on tomorrow. I'm thinking of it this way: If I were to move out of my home, what stuff would I need to get rid of? And then, get rid of it! Trash, recycle, donate.
Something tells me I'm gonna feel a whole lot lighter... and letting go of 'stuff' is keeping a true Lent.
