Curly's View

Well, he's not starving!

... I'm really pretty impressed...

My son Arch is several hours away from home now and having to feed himself.  No school cafeteria, not many choices for fast food and so... he's cooking!  I made sure that he had plenty of supplies in his pantry and refrigerator before I left him last weekend.  I also tried very hard to teach him to cook a few things when he was home on school breaks.  I even wrote out some recipes that I knew he had cooked before.

So far, so good.  I've talked with him every day this past week and he has prepared several meals for himself.  Yesterday was the biggest challenge... he was attempting to cook fish and had next to no experience with that.  Needless to say, we were on the phone for the better part of an hour!  And ya know what?  It wasn't the fish that gave him trouble, it was the rice!   Apparently it burned a little and had to be 'saved'... he ate it anyway.

For a person that hates to cook and not all that good at it myself, this has been like the blind leading the blind... but the boy is making it work and I couldn't be more proud.

Oh, and he's having to clean up after himself, too.  He called me to ask how to run the dishwasher... that was another fifteen minutes on the phone, but we got it figured out.  I'm thinking we made need to start Skyping.
