From barbershop to country with a little rock and roll thrown in for fun!
Of course you know the big thing was the Carrie Underwood concert on Sunday night... great country music from both Carrie and Hunter Hayes... and some pretty flashy clothes, too! But Carrie managed to sneak in a little Aerosmith... she and Steven Tyler are good buds, ya know. It's always a little weird to hear rock coming out of the speakers at a country show, but more and more artists like to spice up their concerts with it. So, it was a great night... BUT....
Meaning no disrespect to Carrie and Hunter... the highlight of my weekend was an outstanding performance by three amazing Barbershop Choruses and two quartets on Saturday afternoon in Lees Summit. Of course my youngest son was singing!!! Ted is part of a new Youth Barbershop Chorus that has been training for a major competition coming up in January in Orlando, Florida. By the sound of their performance this weekend, I'd say they have an excellent chance of taking first place!
I know, it may sound a little weird to be so excited about Barbershop Harmony... but it's not your Grandparent's Barbershop anymore! The youth are really taking it by storm and bringing such a contemporary sound in their pure acapella voices... and it's an incredibly healthy outlet for young men! I am so thankful for the great influence these men have had on my son and now for the friendships he is forming with other talented young men.
If you want to hear and support this wonderful organization, the Sho-Me Statesmen Barbershop Chorus will be performing their annual fundraiser on November 17th, "Ringing In The Season", at Glendale Christian Church in Springfield, 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is $15 Adult, $5 Students, $10 Groups over 20. For tickets call (417) 894-4097, or email MoreTags@hotmail.com.
